E16 Winery

Russian River Valley - Bacigalupi Vineyard

Chardonnay grapes were first planted by the Bacigalupi family on West Side Road in 1956, and were a major player in the legendary 1976 Paris Wine Tasting where they made a 40% contribution to the wine finishing first in a flight stacked with Grand Cru and Premier Cru Burgundies.

Fruit was selected from a block planted in 1976 with chardonnay clone 4 on AXR1 rootstock that was later trained to quadrilateral trellising. Vines thrive at 130 of elevation on geological benches containing gravelly sandy-loam soils (Pleasanton Series). The east-west axis provides great exposure while the 8x12’ vine spacing harmonizes with the well-drained soils, ideal climate and “old school” viticulture to prompt low-yielding vines that engender fat, flavorful wines.

Bacigalupi Vineyard is situated along the “middle reach” of the Russian River Valley AVA, one mile west of the Russian River and two miles south of its confluence with Dry Creek. During the growing season, the climate is typically warm-to-hot at noon, but mitigated by afternoon breezes, perpetually cool nights, and repeating patterns of morning and evening fog.
