Wine Tasting in Winter WINEland

Raise a glass to winter and taste your way through El Dorado wine country.

Brrr, it’s cold outside! But that doesn’t mean you have to give up enjoying a glass of wine. In fact, for many wine lovers, winter is the perfect time to go tasting. Skip the crowds, enjoy the scenic snow-dusted vineyards, and take advantage of a more personal wine tasting experience. Bundle up and get ready to beat the seasonal blues at some of El Dorado’s top wineries.

1. E16 Winery

Located in the heart of Somerset, E16 Winery offers visitors the relaxed charm of El Dorado County with a luxurious twist. Experience first-class treatment as you taste your way through a portfolio of critically acclaimed wines from Sonoma County, Mendocino County, Monterey County, and Baby Rattlesnake Vineyard located in the Fair Play AVA. Encompassing a purpose in a bottle, E16 wines are distinct and identifiable by a sense of place, terroir, and passion.

In search of more pampering? Escape the cold and experience the casual elegance of a private salon-style tasting held in a subterranean cave. The complex flavors of the wine and barrel room aromas alone will win you over.

2. MV Winery

A small winery located in the Fair Play AVA, MV Winery is known for its high quality, small-production wines. Complex with rich flavors, this winery features a lineup of big, bold reds. From vine to bottle, the Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec are true award-winners that demonstrate the Miller’s great passion for winemaking.

3. Oakstone Winery

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Fair Play AVA, Oakstone Winery is all about great friends, excellent wine, and a good time. Estate wines featuring Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah are all shining examples of the surrounding viticultural area. Emphasizing warm days, cool nights, and high elevation, Oakstone wines have a unique intensity balanced with elegance—wonderful for sipping by a cozy fireplace.

4. Cedarville Vineyard

Named after a nearby ghost town in honor of the original settlement and in the spirit of the founding pioneers, Cedarville Vineyards is an iconic gem in the Sierra Foothills. Passionate about the environment, Cedarville owners and hands-on winemakers Jonathan and Susan pride themselves on sustainability. Organically farmed and bottled without filtration, the estate wines reflect the purity of the land, rich in minerality and full of flavor.

5. Shadow Ranch

Go off the beaten path and experience a rustic, chic tasting atop the picturesque Sierra Foothills. A family-owned boutique winery, Shadow Ranch welcomes guests to taste their small-production organically farmed wines and relax under the majestic oak trees on their tasting room terrace. While visiting, don’t forget to ask the friendly wine-tender what inspired the family wine label—you’re in for a treat!
