2013 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The wines from two distinctive Russian River Valley vineyards were embellished with a 13% combined contribution from nearby growing regions to add structure and depth.
Hawks Roost Ranch lies four miles east of the river in the Piner Flat area, a one-time floodplain where the mild slopes consist of sandy clay-loam soils. Five-plus acres of the Mariafeld clone were plotted east-to-west in 1998. Vines receive plentiful sunlight to attain masculine wines with solid structure. The clear growing-season days are subjected to intermittent periods of morning and/or late afternoon coastal fog to mitigate mid-day heat.
Relgnis Family Vineyards is situated at the north end of Laguna Ridge, about eight miles from the coast. Recurrent morning and afternoon fog ensures the development of needed grape acidity. The dark-yellow fine sandy-loam soils control vine vigor so that photosynthesis is directed at grape development versus excessive shoot growth. Augmenting climate and soil, the partnership of pinot noir clone 667 and 101- 14 rootstock produces well-balanced wines that are the hallmark of the Laguna Ridge micro-region.
