Anderson Valley is located in Mendocino County about 110 miles northwest of San Francisco. The small wine region is aligned along a northwest-to-southeast axis and downwind of the frigid Pacific via the mouth of the Navarro River. Average daytime temperatures rise with increased distance from the ocean in an area where pinot noir is the dominant variety planted at 70 percent.
Subjected to cold overnight temperatures with periods of morning frost, the deep or “West End” of the valley is separated from the coastal town of Elk by an 11-mile stretch of Redwood-covered mountains. This extreme climate — among the coolest in California — is well suited to grooming finicky pinot noir vines demanding the proper conditions.
Conzelman Vineyard is positioned on the valley floor at 350 feet of elevation in clay-loam soils where the cold nights and fog stimulate the formation of desired acidity. Two pinot noir clones, Pommard and 667, were planted on 101-14 rootstock in 2001 and join forces to produce well-structure, aromatic wines with broad mid-palate flavors.
