The wines from two distinctive Russian River Valley vineyards were embellished with a 13% combined contribution from properties in Anderson Valley, Bennett Valley and the Santa Lucia Highlands to add structure and depth.
The small, neighboring plantings lie about four miles east of the Russian River in the Piner Flat area, a one-time floodplain where the gentle slopes are composed of clayloam and sandy-clay-loam soils (Huichica Series). During the growing season, clear days are subjected to intermittent periods of morning and/or late afternoon fog from the coast, mitigating mid-day heat and soothing pinot noir grapes into giving up their bounty.
Five-plus acres of the Mariafeld clone grow on Hawks Roost Ranch where rows were plotted on an east-west grid in 1998. Vines receive abundant sunlight to attain masculine wines with solid structure.
Martaella Vineyards were developed in 2007 with 42 acres of pinot noir clones Dijon and 828 in a high-density planting. The mix of location and cultural practices strikes an optimum balance of aroma, flavor and structure.
